The photograph selected to feature on our 2024 membership card is Beautiful broken ice, reflections and Terra Nova by Herbert Ponting. This view of the Terra Nova in McMurdo Sound was taken on 7 January 1911 shortly after the ship reached Antarctica.

Herbert G. Ponting, whose photography skills were self-taught, was enlisted in 1910 as Captain Robert Falcon Scott's photographer on the ill-fated British Antarctic Expedition to the South Pole (1910-1913). Alongside the work of the team of scientists, Ponting’s images aided geographical and natural discovery.

Remaining with the crew for almost 14 months, Ponting took over 1,000 impressively balanced and composed images which documented in exceptional detail the journey and daily life of the expedition’s early months.
