A joint walk with the Wainwright Society to explore the natural history and landscape of the Northern Fells. To quote AW 'unspoilt, serene and restful, a perfect sanctuary for birds and animals and fellwalkers who prefer to be away from crowds'.

Our meeting point will be at the Cumbria Wildlife Trust Eycott Nature Reserve OS 90 NY393302 where there is a small car park. We will undertake a short circular walk (1km) to the viewpoint from the car park to appreciate the spectacular views and mosaic of upland habitats. We will then relocate to Mungrisedale where there is parking courtesy of the Parish Council (£2) to commence our walk along the R.Glenderamakin before our ascent of Souther Fell (522m). As AW wrote ‘Souther Fell occupies an important position as a cornerstone of the Northern Fells, having an extensive view out of proportion to its modest height’. The walk will finish at the Mill Inn in Mungrisedale.

The walk will be led by Tim Foster FRGS and Phil Houghton FRGS.

Event information

The walk will cover a distance of 10km, and ascent 300m. Grassy and stony paths, open exposed Fells, and remote river valley. Participants should have previous hill walking experience.
