21st Century Challenges: engaging with issues facing you today

The future of low carbon energy

Evidence shows that our planet is warming with dramatic climate change in both the UK and abroad. Most scientists agree that rapid rises in the use of greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution cause this.

Fossil fuels used in transportation and energy production in industrialised countries is a major contributor, as well as deforestation in developing countries.

The UK, along with a number of other nations, has committed itself to a target of a 2º C rise in average temperature since the industrial revolution (this is currently around 0.7º C). To do this, carbon dioxide emissions need to reduced by 60% (or as much as 80%) by 2050.

How we can honour that commitment? And how we can ensure energy security where energy supplies are uncertain?

Malcolm Wicks & Lord Browne discuss these points, chaired by Prof Sir Gordon Conway.
