Head of Public Engagement and Communications

The Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers) is expanding its Senior Management Team with a new appointment to lead and develop further the Society’s work in public engagement and communications. We seek a colleague who will bring appropriate senior expertise in these two areas, a passion for using geography to encourage and enable everyone to understand our changing world, and a combination of strong intellect, strategic leadership and team management skills.

The Society’s work in public engagement is highly regarded and has been expanded in recent years. The postholder will have responsibility, within the framework of our 2012-2016 strategy, for:

  • Sustaining and developing further our work in public engagement online, on-site and outdoors, including partnerships with diverse community groups
  • Leading the current review of the Society’s regional programme, with the intention of engaging existing members, new members and the public more fully, nationally and internationally
  • Developing and implementing a communications strategy to enhance the Society’s public profile and that of geography with our breadth of user audiences, members and wider stakeholders
  • Leading on the development of our social media policy

The post is salaried between £63,000 and £70,000 per annum depending on experience and qualifications. The Society offers a work experience programme for enthusiastic geographers, ranging from those studying geography at GCSE and A Level, through to undergradatues and geography ambassadors.

All placements are unpaid and based in London at the RGS-IBG. We do not pay expenses or provide accommodation.
