Find, explore and create connections with Olympic nations
Walk the World is an exciting new website, launched by broadcaster Nick Crane, FRGS, which is asking everyone in the UK to join in the race to find local connections to all of the 206 Nations taking part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by the start of the opening ceremony.
Developed by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in partnership with Discovering Places, the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign to inspire the UK to discover their local built, historic and natural environment, Walk the World is an easy and exciting way to participate in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, no matter where you live.
Experience a selection of walk images and discover some of the links that have already been made between the UK and other participating nations through the new BBC News audio slideshow. There are also a number of other BBC News audio slideshows featuring the Society's work.
Visit the website to find and share street names, place names, memorial plaques, buildings and spaces that reveal the influence of Olympic and Paralympic nations and their people and how they have helped to shape our environment. There are 30 countries which have not yet been linked with the UK including; Andorra, Comoros and Monaco, be the first to find the links. | |

Now open: With Scott to the Pole, the Society's exhibition, remembering Captain Scott's doomed expedition in its centenary year. Combining fine polar photography by the official expedition photographer with a digital gallery of modern scientific research the exhibition reflects Scott's legacy, the beginning of scientific research in Antarctica.
As well as our exhibition the Society commemorates Captain R.F. Scott, RN and the ‘Terra Nova’ expedition with talks and showcases.
The educational website, Discovering Antarctica is available as a resource to students and teachers.
