Choosing a course

There are more than 90 universities offering over 1600 geography related degrees. You can apply to up to five courses through UCAS.

Choosing which universities to apply to is obviously an important decision and the chances of obtaining a realistic offer depend on choosing universities which are looking for people with your interests and academic record and background. In making your choice there are many factors you need to take into account; for example:

What aspects of geography do you want to study?
Do you want to study a combined/joint honours course? (Geography plus another subject)
Do the modules offered reflect your interests?
How many taught classes per week are there are as compared with independent learning?
  What are the fieldwork opportunities?
How are different modules assessed? What percentage of the total degree marks come from course work and what percentage from exams?
How big is the department? How often will you see your personal tutor?
  What are the entrance requirements?
What’s the reputation of the course/university?
Its location – a campus, a large city? In a certain part of the country?
How expensive will it be? What are the likely opportunities for part-time work? To live at home?
  What about specific social activities?
