Curriculum development

During the summer of 2005 a working group was convened to produce recommendations on curriculum development for geography in schools.  It was made clear that the aim of the group was not to re-write the curriculum or recommend new content. However, it was an opportunity to consider other matters. For example, how to build curriculum development to ensure:

  • that topical and relevant issues are incorporated
  • teaching is responsive to the needs of learners
  • the subject is current, dynamic and ‘in touch’

Also, how to handle the ‘knotty problems’ of curriculum planning such as:

  • progression in geography
  • Continuity and coherence

The overall aim of the Working Group meetings was to produce a succinct set of achievable goals and recommendations on one side of A4 that were presented to the Department for Education and Skills. The draft recommendations were put out for consultation and were strongly endorsed by the geography community.
