Geography focus group

The geography 'focus group' aimed to set out pragmatic solutions to improve the teaching and learning of geography in schools and raise the profile of the subject.

The 'focus group' involved leading academics, teachers, business people and other experts. There was a formal consultation of the sector and special working groups focusing on 6 priorty areas:

  • cross-cutting themes
  • curriculum development
  • fieldwork and outdoor education
  • network and links
  • professional development
  • public engagement

The strategy began in 2004 when the then Secretary of State at the Department for Education and Skills Rt Hon Charles Clarke MP, asked the RGS-IBG and Geographical Association to submit a proposal to him for a geography 'focus group' to help the move the subject forward in schools.

The Action Plan for Geography
The focus group created an Action Plan for Geography, which  was launched 30 March 2006 at an event at the Society in London, speakers included Michael Palin (pictured) and Lord Adonis, the schools minister.
