There is much to be welcomed in the secondary curriculum (Key Stage 3) launched by the government on 12 July 2007.
The RGS-IBG and Geographical Association have worked closely with government agencies to refresh the curriculum.
The new geography curriculum gives teachers the freedom to engage students with geographical concepts, and enthuse them through topical issues, such as climate change and sustainable development, as well as to build on students' experiences of local areas.
'For the first time, geography teaching at Key Stage 3 will contextualise Britain’s cultural diversity and encourage understanding and tolerance, which, in the current climate, is a move we very much welcome'.
Dr Rita Gardner CBE, Director, RGS-IBG and adviser to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families.
