Environment and Society Forum

Many vital issues currently placed high on governmental agendas have important geographical dimensions. Geographers, with their knowledge of both social and environmental processes are well placed to contribute to solutions. The Forum's events bring together business, research, non-governmental and policy-making communities within a neutral and respected setting.

Amongst the speakers were the government Chief Scientist Professor Sir John Beddington and Shadow DfiD Secretary Ivan Lewis MP.
Energy, food and water security: the perfect storm » 10 February 2011 Day-long seminar. Amongst the speakers were the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Met Office's Chief Scientist. Chaired by Professor Sir Gordon Conway and the Society's Vice President for Research, Professor Mike Bradshaw.	Water policy seminars » Latest 10 July 2012 (and every year since 2009) Roundtable seminars on water policy at the Society each year at the 'Future Water' conferences of the UK Parliament's all-party water group. These have led to the publication of a policy document - Water policy in the UK: The challenges.	High speed rail » 1 Febuary 2012, House of Commons, London. Parliamentary event with the Regional Studies Association (RSA) and the Academy for Social Sciences (AcSS). Chaired by Louise Ellman MP, Chair of the Transport Select Committee.

Alcohol policy » 10 February 2010 and 8 December 2010 All-day seminar: Drinking spaces and places - where and how people drink alcohol. A follow up event launching the Consumption Controversies policy document, took place in Parliament chaired by Kevin Barron MP.

Tourism policy » Various dates in 2008 and 2009 A series of events hosted with the Tourism Society covering the environment; climate change; the coast; and rural issues.
