Bullet Latest UCAS figures for geography April 08
The numbers of those applying for full-time undergraduate courses starting this autumn:

  • Physical Geographical Sciences: 16,134 applications (decrease of 9.9% since 2007)
  • Human & Social Geography: 14,300 applications (down by 6.1%since 2007)

Numbers applying for most subjects have decreased this year, due to the number of choices made by students being reduced.

Bullet Government review of academia and policy, March 2008
John Denham MP, the minister in overall charge of universities, announced a review on policy-relevant research in speech at the Wellcome Trust. He said:

“This government spends £6bn a year on research, yet ministers and officials sometimes find it hard to access academic knowledge tailored to the practical needs of public policy ... I've asked the Council for Science & Technology, led by Janet Finch, to take a broad look at the relationship between academia and policymakers”.
