Requesting or becoming a mentor

Teachers who are keen to apply for CGeog (Teacher) status are able to request a mentor to guide them through the application process and offer feedback.

Becoming a mentor

Once you have achieved Chartered Geographer (Teacher) status you can become a mentor to other teachers who are working towards gaining the experience necessary to be awarded Chartered status.

Why should I become a mentor?

  • To assist other teachers in gaining the necessary experience and knowledge to fulfill the criteria for Chartered Geographer (Teacher)
  • Demonstrates your commitment to advancing your own professional development and the professional development of others
  • Sharing best practice and geographical skills and knowledge
  • To support the creation of CPD networks within local regions and between schools
  • Provides evidence towards your 35 hour Chartered Geographer (Teacher) annual CPD requirement

How do I become a mentor?

Once you have achieved Chartered Geographer (Teacher) status you will be sent an official letter congratulating you. This will include an offer to become a mentor to teachers working towards the status. If you choose to become a mentor you should then email Claire at cgeogteacher@rgs.org for further guidance, approval and to be added to the list of mentors.

Requesting a mentor

While you are working towards Chartered Geographer (Teacher) status you can request to be matched with a mentor who will offer support and guidance towards gaining the experience necessary to be awarded Chartered status.

  • To benefit from the knowledge of a current Chartered Geographer who will support you in gaining the necessary experience and knowledge to fulfil the criteria for Chartered Geographer (Teacher)

  • To open up new contacts, networks, ideas and opportunities

How do I request a mentor?

Once you have decided to apply for Chartered Geographer (Teacher) status, please contact Claire at cgeogteacher@rgs.org. You can request a mentor at any point in your teaching career, even if you have not yet reached the required six years of teaching to achieve Chartered status. Once a mentor has been requested you will be matched to a Chartered Geographer in your local area (if available), your contact details will be swapped, and you and the mentor will then be responsible for arranging communication.

Mentoring case study

One of our CGeog (Teachers), Paul Hunt (formally of St Peters High School, now at The Appleton School in Essex) worked on a joint project with the candidate he was mentoring towards the accrediatation. That teacher was Simon Renshaw from Soar Valley Community College in Leicestershire.

Aims and objectives of the project.

  • To develop links between a rural and an urban secondary school
  • Year seven students to explore their feelings and identify with places within their personal geography
  • Year seven students to share their personal geographies with other students via the web and radio
  • Year seven students to compare and contrast the different personal geographies
  • To incorporate ICT within geography using community walks, and Google Earth

Here is what Paul has to say about the project:

"The photos show an assessment of map skills and an understanding of place.

The year seven students were asked to annotate a map of our local area, the Dengie. The students were asked to locate areas that were special to them, and to explain the geography of the area, as well as explaining why it was important to them. We were using the Ordnance Survey Free 1:25,000 explorer maps in class to locate places and features. This gave the students a good understanding of basic map skills, such as contour lines, map symbols and grid references.

I then used Memory Map to print off the Dengie peninsular onto A3 paper, ready for the students to annotate.

Once this stage was complete, we then moved on to creating routes in Google Earth. Just before Christmas the students will share their work with the students from Soar Valley and then compare their localities."
