Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a career long process by which professionals keep their subject, skills and knowledge up to date.
This is applicable to all professions and should be encouraged as standard practice in the workplace.
For examples of CPD carried out by Chartered Geographers, please see the documents on the right.
Requirements for application:
Evidence of a commitment to CPD is needed for all CGeog applications. It is strongly recommended that supporting evidence from the last 6 years is included, in whatever format is most suitable.
The Society's template CPD Record [MSWORD] for Chartered Geographers can be used in your application. Please make sure you include all dates, locations, topics, presenter, author, audience and attendee information, where appropriate.
Evidence of a future commitment to CPD is also essential for a successful CGeog application.
CGeog (GIS) applicants may choose to take part in the AGI CPD Scheme, which produces a certified and formal record of professional development. The records can be used in both application for CGeog and maintaining CGeog status.
After achieving Chartered status:
You will be required to log all the CPD you do and submit this to the RGS-IBG on an annual basis.
You will need to collect at least 35 points per year; with the general rule being 1 hour of CPD equals 1 CPD point (see CPD Guidance and Proforma [MSWORD] for further details). You will need to do at least 15 hours internal and 20 hours external CPD.
CPD should be a lifelong activity where you plan what you need to do next to enhance your career, carry this out, and then analyse what you learnt and what you will need to do next to improve even further.
