This family history course, led by Simon Fowler, editor of the National Archives’ Ancestors magazine, focuses how the Society’s Collections can enhance genealogical research.
The course includes sessions on how to start a family history project, and how to use the Society’s unique resources: maps, photographs and archival materials, as well as other institutions’ resources.

The 2-million strong collection of books, maps, manuscript records and photographs held by the Society can enrich your experience of family history, opening new doors to understanding your relatives' or friends' lives.
Covering 500 years as well as contemporary maps and photographs, the Society’s Collections can aid family historians to:
- Enhance knowledge about an ancestor’s life and times
- Explore family members' locations with the Society’s collection of over 1 million maps and atlases
- Understand peoples’ migration around the world, dating back to 1830, including images by travellers from the beginning of photography onwards
- Study the achievements of family members with links to geography and the Society through membership records and expeditions reports.
