Mapping Africa

The Society’s Collections hold over 50,000 items relating to the continent of Africa. These include maps, charts and atlases ranging from representations in the Society’s earliest printed item – a hybrid atlas of Ptolemy’s Cosmographia or Geographia, published in Ulm in 1486 – to unique 19th century manuscript maps by David Livingstone, John Hanning Speke, Augustus Grant and others. Contemporary maps and atlases also provide coverage for modern-day Africa.
