Expedition Medicine Training

This two-day course has been designed for those departing on expeditions to remote parts of the world where medical help is not readily available.

Developed specially by members of the Society’s Expedition Medicine advisory group, the course consists of discussions, lectures, workshops and practical sessions. Groups of up to 12 delegates are led by an experienced trainer. 

The course includes sessions on:

  • Good medical planning
  • Diagnosis of illnesses
  • The Collapsed Patient
  • Symptom based medical assessments
  • ABC approach to trauma, including fractures and dislocations
  • Managing head & neck injuries, chest & abdomen injuries, and  wounds & burns
  • Moving casualties
  • Altitude related illnesses
  • Tropical problems
  • Thermal injuries (heat, cold, and drowning)
  • Expedition medical kits
  • Legal considerations

Upon completion of this course delegates are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years. This course fulfils the first aid training criteria for UK National Governing Body Awards (e.g. Mountain Leader Award).
