Land Rover 'Go Beyond' Bursary

The Land Rover ‘Go Beyond’ Bursary, run by the Society on behalf of Land Rover, provides £10,000 funding and the use of a Land Rover 110 Defender vehicle to help the recipient 'go beyond' when exploring their understanding of a particular geographical environment.

The award aims to promote a wider understanding and enjoyment of geography and should take the recipient beyond their normal limits and boundaries.

  2010 Recipient Profile

Serena Davies, Tamsin Davies and Adam Whitaker - Fault Line Living

Fault Line Living set off for Iceland on 31 July 2010 as the first stage of their journey to explore the realities for those living along fault lines. The team will travel on to Italy, Greece, Turkey and Iran, covering some 15,000 miles in 12 weeks. Along the way they will be working with school students, seismologists and talking to locals of each country to uncover how different communities adapt to the challenges of fault line living.

  2009 Recipient Profile

William Lorimer, Tim Bromfield & Lynn Morris - Atlantic Rising

According to recent climate predictions, the Atlantic sea level will rise up to 1m over the next 100 years.

Atlantic Rising is tracing the new coastline of the ocean, exploring the places, people and histories that will be lost in the rising tide of climate change.

The team left the UK in September 2009 and since then have driven around West Africa and crossed the Atlantic by container ship. They are currently in Brazil heading north up the east coast of the Americas to Canada.

Along the way the team is building a network of schools in low lying communities around the ocean's rim. At each school they asked children to write a 'message in a bottle' and halfway across the ocean they launched a capsule containing all the letters and a tracker. Students can follow the progress of their messages on the Atlantic Rising website.

The team's journey has featured in a variety of media. To learn more, please follow the following links:
