2001 Tessa McGregor

Current position
Freelance wildlife biologist, journalist and radio presenter.

Journey of a Lifetime Award
‘By Rocket to Tigerland’

A journey into Bengal's Sunbardan forest, home ti an impressive array of wildlife: tigers, Gangetic river dolphins, estuarine crocodiles, sharks, spotted deer, monkeys, birds, whales in the Bay of Bengal…and many more.

The elusive Sundarban tigers have a fearsome reputation as man-eaters.  Tessa McGregor travelled to find out more about these tigers.

Her journey took her into the mangrove forest. Tessa travelled throughout the forest, exploring, tracking tigers, surveying wildlife, living with local people and seeing the threats they, and the forest, face.

Over 2 months, she built an accurate picture of these ever-shifting, much-maligned mangroves and the people and wildlife that depend on them for survival.

Since the Journey of a Lifetime Award
Tessa has made short features for BBC World Service and radio shows for BBC Natural History Unit: Snow Leopards in Siberia, Dancing BearsArabian Leopards and India’s Blue Hills.  In 2007, Tessa made the highly praised Wild Arabia series for Radio 4.
