'From the Field' Goldsmiths' Award

Are you a teacher interested in inspiring young people to get involved in fieldwork? Do you want to work with experienced researchers to develop exciting new educational resources for your pupils and other geography teachers?

Delivered in collaboration with The Goldsmiths' Company, several awards of £500 are available to geography teachers to work alongside practitioners at the cutting edge of geographical research to develop educational resources for the classroom.

'From the Field' Goldsmiths' Award recipients

  2012: Bob Lang. 'Urbanisation and Migration'. The key stage 4 resources are based on the research of Jane Labous, recipient of the Journey of a Lifetime Award, who went to Mali to meet with the sand-diggers who dredge sand from the River Niger for the countries booming building trade. The resources highligh rural dwellers who have migrated to the urban hub of Bamako for employment.

  2011: Emma Brayne. 'Extreme Tourism'. The key stage 4 resources are based on the research of Paul Howard and Tanzin Norbu, recipients of the Neville Shulman Challenge Award. The journey took the challenging route through the Chadar Gorge to the Himalayan Kingdom of Zanskar in winter. The resources highlight the expansion of extreme tourism and the resultant effect of these fragile environments.

  2011: Alan Parkinson. 'Moorland Ecology'. The key stage 4 resources are based on the research of PhD student Rose Wilcox, supported by the RGS-IBG Postgraduate Research Award. The project focussed on the ecosystem services provided by moorlands, and the effect on these ecosystems as a result of moorland fires. The resources highlight the management of a the moorland ecosystem after a fire and the restoration of the morrland.

  2011: Alan Parkinson. 'Energy Security'. The key stage 5 resources are based on the research of PhD student Ralitsa Hiteva, supported by the RGS-IBG Postgraduate Research Award. The project explored the way that energy is used, governed and controlled in a number of EU countries. The resources look at energy consumption, both at a local level (consumption by the school) and a a global level, and energy security for the future.

  2011: Eleanor Coulber. 'Ocean Acidification'. The key stage 5 resources are based on the research of Dr Helen Findlay, recipient of the Ralph Brown Expedition Award. The project studied effects of ocean acidification on Arctic marine communities. The resources analyse data collected by the researcher, incorporating the methods of statistical analysis required across A Level specifications.

  2011: Dr David Anderson. 'Glacial Landscapes'. The key stage 5 resources are based on the research of Dr Stephanie Mills and Dr Tim Burrows, recipients of the Peter Fleming Award. The project focussed on the past climate and glaciation of the Drakensberg Mountains of southern Africa. The resources look at the Last Glacial Maximum and the evidence by which researchers can judge the changes in climate over time.

About the Award

The 'From the Field' Awards supported by The Goldsmiths' Company, were first given in 2011. This scheme aims to develop a range of resources for GCSE and A Level students in line with exam board specifications that draw on projects supported by the Society's grants programme. The inspiration of fieldwork sits at their core.
