Why do fieldwork?

There are many opportunities to participate in fieldwork as an undergraduate or recent graduate; for example with clubs and societies, volunteering locally or overseas or taking a gap year between degree and employment. The Society also provides funding through our student grants and for first year undergraduates through the Learning and Leading Field Apprenticeships.

Field Apprenticeships

Each year since 2009 we have awarded a small number of bursaries that have given first year university geography students the opportunity to participate in overseas research projects led by a lecturer at their university. The £2,000 grant awarded to each first year student allows them to spend several weeks of their summer holiday taking part in a research project that can take place across the globe and be based on any topic as long as the fieldwork meets the criteria below.

In 2016, the final year of the Learning and Leading programme, six Field Apprenticeships are available.

The deadline for applying for the 2016 Fieldwork Apprenticeship is 1700hrs on Friday 19th  February 2016.  This deadline will be strictly enforced.

Interviews for short-listed candidates will take place on Thursday 10th March 2016.
