Area emphasis is on publishing the latest geographical research and ideas from postgraduates through to established academics.
Established in 1969 as a bulletin for The Institute of British Geographers, it has evolved into a full academic journal of the Royal Geographic Society (with the IBG).
Area features regular special sections on topics of interest hosted by Guest Editors.
It has a popular Book Review section and awards the annual Area Prize for New Research in Geography for the best paper by an early career researcher.

Area news:
The Area Prize for the best paper in 2009 (announced at the Society's AGM in June 2010) has been awarded to Edmund Harris, for the paper 'Neoliberal subjectivities or a politics of the possible? Reading for difference in alternative food networks' published in Area (2009) 41 55–63.
