Accreditation of university geography programmes

The Society's university geography programme accreditation scheme offers recognition of undergraduate and integrated Masters degree programmes delivering key geographical knowledge, understanding, skills and approaches, and the development of professional and personal attributes of geography graduates. For accreditation of individuals using geographical skills in the workplace, please see Chartered Geographer.

Accreditation scheme aims

The Society's Accreditation scheme appraises geography programmes seeking to deliver the knowledge, understanding, skills, approaches and professional/personal attributes expected of high quality geography graduates, as recorded in the QAA subject benchmark statement for geography. Through programme accreditation we aim to:

  • Share and promote the benefits of geography for the world beyond higher education
  • Recognise good practice in geography learning and teaching
  • Enhance competitiveness for students in a crowded graduate jobs market
  • Provide a means to support the continuous quality improvement of UK geography degree programmes
  • Support the international standing of UK higher education geography as a rigorous and applied subject.
