Description An exploration of various dimensions of sustainable development: social economic, political and environmental.
Level A taught Masters level programme.
Aim To encourage students to examine the ways in which environmental, social, political and economic factors interrelate at a range of scales to produce particular understandings of ‘sustainable development’ and associated policies and practices. In addition, the programme provides training in subject-specific skills needed to research and assess sustainable development, such as project development, geographic information systems and participatory methods, as well as training in key generic skills including communication, group working, critical awareness and reflectiveness.
Delivery The taught elements are a core course comprised of ten modules and a research training stream. Students also carry out an independent piece of research through a dissertation. Teaching and learning methods on the course include seminars, role-playing, problem-solving, presentations (both individual and group), group working, practical classes and one-to-one supervision of the dissertation.
