Department & institution School of Applied Global Ethics, Leeds Metropolitan University

Description The School of Applied Global Ethics (SAGE) is an important development for Leeds Metropolitan University as it strives to be a world-class regional university with world-wide horizons. Through teaching, research and consultancy, the School aims to make a difference to the institution and to the city and region, as well as contributing to professional life and academic debate at national and international levels. All of these activities will focus on developing ethical awareness, thought and practice.

Level The work of SAGE is institution-wide. It will help to create a University in which critical analysis and ethical reflection form part of the learning experience for all students; as important to their preparation for work as for the development of their academic and professional skills and knowledge.

Aim In order to fulfil its vision the School aims:

  • To nurture the growth of ethical awareness and practice throughout all aspects of university life
  • To undertake research of national and international importance; teaching and curriculum development; consultancy and professional development in applied global ethics and related areas
  • To facilitate the work of academic colleagues across the university in addressing ethical issues that arise in their teaching, research and practice
  • One way in which this will be achieved is by developing teaching and research resources in applied ethics
  • To offer support to non-academic colleagues in addressing the ethical implications of their work
  • To work towards a situation in which all students of the university have significant contact with ethical thinking, and opportunities to develop the skills and disciplines necessary for ethical practice
  • To influence practice in professional contexts of all kinds by offering consultancy and professional development aimed at allowing the integration of ethical reflection in practical decision making.
