Royal Geographical Society (with IBG): the heart of geography
  ‘I Love Compost’ – Children claiming space and time in urban areas

These photographs were taken by young people for PhD research on well-being in three green spaces in the UK and Ireland. These provide chances for play, contact with nature, and learning about living within environmental limits and being an active part of the natural world.

"This is my vegetable patch. I grow things here. I grow food, vegetables. I like it because it’s just mine."

"This is the compost toilet. This is strange and unordinary for what you would usually find in an allotment. It is good because we use manure in it and waste from the compost bins."

"I help putting things in, I put in eggshells and weeds. Putting compost on, makes food smell and taste nicer. Compost helps plants to grow strong and have better fruit. It is nice and organic. It helps the earth and it is not polluting."

"These strawberries are dead delicious and juicy. They are kept really healthy. We water them every 5 weeks."

"We make paint out of these flowers. The yellow works brilliantly."

"You can eat the orange flowers. They are nice and tasty. You can always bring flowers home and plant them at home."
