Geographical research into cultures, economies and environments brings new knowledge and improved understanding of the world. Applying that knowledge can help to solve some of the many challenges facing society and the environment.

Since 1830, we have promoted  geographical research through:

  active specialist research groups
  Annual International Conference
  journals and book series
  raising the intellectual profile of geography within academia and beyond
  influencing the agendas of the research funders
  encouraging and supporting quality desk and field-based research
  developing partnerships with other leading geographical societies
  promoting the Society’s Collections as a research resource
