Research Group Guests for Annual Conference

Quantitative Methods

The Quantitative Methods Research Group (QMRG) seeks to promote the use of appropriate quantitative techniques in geographical research and teaching.

Membership of the group spans the human / physical divide within the subject.

Activities and services include:

  • Sessions at the annual conference, and an additional specialist meeting each year
  • Significant contributions to a series of biennial European meetings: 'Colloquia on Quantitative and Theoretical Geography' (many of the Group's research meetings have been organised in collaboration with other organisations, including the Remote Sensing Society, ESRC Data Archive, and other Research Groups, reflecting the broad range of interests of Research Group members.)
  • Concepts and Techniques in Modern Geography series, in which over 60 titles have now been published

In a period in which there are many qualitative approaches to the study of (particularly human) geography, the group has still seen major new developments, prompted by remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS), and the availability of large spatial datasets.
