Launched in March 2006, the Action Plan for Geography is two year programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (formerly DfES) and led by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and the Geographical Association.
In 2008, the government renewed its commitment to supporting geography in schools by supporting the Action Plan for Geography for a further three years.
The Action Plan is underpinned by the outcomes of the geography focus group - a team of geographers from academia, business, charities, government, media and schools - who met several times in 2004-5 under the chairmanship of the schools minister.
The aim of the Action Plan is to inspire and support teachers, raise awareness of the importance of geography in schools and ensure that guidance, training, innovation and recognition of professional advancement in geography teaching are provided.
The RGS-IBG is leading on 4 specifics strands of the Plan:
- geography ambassadors scheme
- Chartered Geographer (Teacher)
- Key Stage 3 resources
- virtual fieldwork and local learning
