Routes into teaching

Are you eligible for a geography scholarship?

If you have the subject knowledge and personal qualities necessary to succeed as a geography teacher, and you meet the eligibility criteria outlined below, we encourage you to apply.

It is important that you meet the eligibility criteria before you apply for a scholarship. If you are in doubt, please contact us on scholarships@rgs.org before you submit your application.

To be eligible for a scholarship you will need to have the following:

  • A strong commitment to the educational value that studying geography can bring to young people and be able to demonstrate your interest in this alongside any relevant experience
  • An excellent proven (or predicted) academic record in geography, holding either a first or 2:1 Hons degree1, or a Master's or PhD
  • Secured a training place on an eligible non-salaried school or university-led geography course in England for the coming academic year*
  • Met the bursary eligibility criteria – visit Get Into Teaching for more information

1 2:2 under exceptional circumstances with significant additional experience

* You do not need to apply for a teacher training course before a scholarship application is submitted, but to receive a scholarship you must have secured a training place by September 2018. Your training place must be on an eligible university-led or school-led (fee-based, non-salaried) geography ITT course in England for the 2018/19 academic year. The training place must have been allocated in accordance with the ITT allocations methodology for academic year 2018 to 2019 and must be delivered by an institution accredited by DfE as an ITT provider. Additionally, eligible courses lead, upon completion, to a recommendation, on behalf of the trainee, for the award of QTS.

You can apply for teacher training via UCAS Teacher Training. For more information on the routes into teaching and help with your application visit the Get Into Teaching site.
