Frequently asked questions
The information below may assist you in determining your eligibility or making an application for a geography teacher training scholarship. If your question is not answered below, please contact email@example.com for advice.
Do I need a geography degree?
We are seeking applications from those with an undergraduate degree in geography or a related discipline (for example, geology, earth sciences, or environment sciences where geography forms 60% or more of the material covered).
If you cannot meet this specific requirement for the Geography Scholarships you may still be able to apply for a bursary to teach geography through Get into Teaching.
I have a PhD, would I be suitable?
Yes. Applications are not restricted to those with an undergraduate degree.
I am doing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in geography, can I apply?
Yes, if you meet the other eligibility criteria.
I’m not a recent graduate, can I still apply?
Yes. As long as you meet our criteria it doesn’t matter whether you are a current or recent graduate or a ‘career changer’. If you are the latter your experiences in the workplace could provide additional support to your application.
Should my teacher training place be confirmed before applying for a scholarship?
You do not need to apply for a teacher training course before a scholarship application is submitted, but you must have secured an eligible teacher training place by September. You can apply for teacher training via UCAS Teacher Training. For more information on the routes into teaching and help with your application go to Get Into Teaching website
Will RGS-IBG arrange my teacher training course?
No. Our RGS-IBG Scholarships are awarded separately to your teacher training place which you must apply for independently.
If I get a Scholarship will I also get the government’s training bursary?
No. If you are selected to receive one of our scholarships it will be instead of the government’s training bursary.
What happens after I submit my application?
We will contact you by email if your application is shortlisted and then invite you to attend an assessment day at the Society. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and assessment days will take place monthly.
