Topical case studies

These case studies provide material particularly suited to GCSE and AS/A Level students. They are based on:

  • presentations made at the Society’s teacher training events.
  • materials in the Society’s Collections
  • research undertaken by Fellows of the Society

*New* Bullet  The Great Wall of China
Developed for use on an interactive whiteboard (although also available as a PowerPoint), this resource uses maps and images from the Society’s Collections and recent images exploring changes,in in Badalang, near Beijing. It looks at the region around the Wall and the impact of modern tourism on the area as well as the Wall itself.

Bullet  Ecotourism in the KwaZulu-Natal region
Written by Dr George Hughes of The Conservation Trust (KwaZulu-Natal), this article examines how tourism in the region has changed: from hunting safaris in the early and mid 20th century to responsible tourism in the region today.

Bullet  Flooding in Bangladesh
Flooding in Bangladesh is a way of life with people living there employing strategies to cope with this annual phenomenon. Based on research conducted by Professor Michael Tooley at Kingston University and Professor Monsur from Dacca University, this article, compiled by Judith Mansell, follows flooding which occurred in August 2000.

This case study focuses on the London Information Service website, originally developed in 2000 for the Mayoral elections, but since updated with aerial photographs, satellite imagery, street maps and Ordnance Survey maps.
