This project aims to encourage, support and facilitate the development of geography-based school -community-higher education links and regional networks.
Such networks between teachers and local business, NGO, professional and public sector communities, and with the higher education community, can enhance curriculum development, enrich the learning and teaching experiences, support CPD, demonstrate the application relevance and employment opportunities provided by studying geography, and encourage and widen the uptake of HE opportunities.
This project has benchmarked the scope, nature and benefits of existing established links between school geography departments, the local community and HE Institutions. A report on the findings of this project is available to download.
We provide case studies of existing good practice in schools and universities, showing the type of links that can be formed by geography departments, and what can be gained from these links.
We also present hints and tips for establishing and maintaining effective school geography-community and school geography-HE links, provided by experienced teachers who also highlight the common pitfalls of establishing and maintaining links and how to avoid them.
Examples of how these links fit into GCSE and A Level specifications and innovative teaching ideas are also provided.
