Ecological and Carbon Footprints

This section introduces teachers to two sets of tools: ecological footprints and carbon footprints.

Ecological and carbon footprints place emphasis on the environmental dimension of sustainable development, rather than the economic or social.

Once there is a fundamental realisation that personal lifestyle choices have an impact on the natural environment, the wider aspects of the concepts can begin to be explained.

An introduction to the concepts and a summary and evaluation of the web-based footprint calculators most applicable to the needs of pupils in Key Stages 2-5 are available.

There are also sections on the underlying concepts behind the questions posed in the footprint calculators and for those seeking a deeper understanding of the principles underlying the calculations.

Two schemes of work are available to download. Created by Daniel Raven-Ellison, they use 'Geography in the News' and Ecological Footprints to incorporate Education for Sustainable Development into the geography curriculum.
