Getting started with GIS

'Getting started with GIS' project

This project was funded in 2003 by the then DfES Curriculum Division and incorporates all the information needed to start using GIS.

It includes sections about:

  • what is GIS?
  • what are the advantages of using GIS?
  • what GIS offers in the classroom?
  • who uses GIS?

The documents contain existing websites which provide more information about GIS, including classroom exemplars from schools and several GIS software providers. The documents also contain links to other sites which use GIS to present data, most of which can be used in lessons to provide pupils with an example of what GIS is and how it can be used.
