Economic activity differences between 2 Staffordshire suburbs: Can GIS help students understand the differences between suburbs?

Suburbs are often regarded as areas of high quality of life. Not all suburbs are the same and some do not fit easily with pre-conceived concepts of comfort and conformity. Two contrasting areas are the focus of this study; Aston Lodge, a suburban area of Stone Staffordshire, and Bentilee in the suburbs of the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

This exercise is designed for use with KS4 and post 16 students and uses Scamp 4 2001 Census Data.

Documents to download include:

  • how GIS can help students to understand economic activity
  • ward maps of Stoke on Trent
  • a sample student activity
  • a PowerPoint investigating the health of the residents of Stoke on Trent

This resource was written by Bob Jones, Head of Geography at Alleynes's High School.
