Household structure in Tower Hamlets and Cambridge

As part of their course on urban settlement, students could study the decline and regeneration of London Docklands.

Year 9 pupils from the Perse School in Cambridge take part in a fieldtrip to London Docklands, including a guided walk from the Greenwich foot tunnel to Canary Wharf.  The walk takes them through areas of contrasting socio-economic and demographic status.

The resource was created so that pupils could link digital photos taken on the fieldtrip to a map of the Docklands, and analyse data from the 2001 Census in order to understand the diversity of household types in the study area and compare the results to their local area (Cambridge).  The resource uses Aegis software.

Documents to download include:

  • household structure in Tower Hamlets and Cambridge
  • Isle of Dogs map
  • a selection of London Docklands images
  • Aegis 3 files that have been converted to pdf format: Docklands virtual tour, comparing Tower Hamlets and Cambridge and who lives where in the inner city (if you would like copies of these files in .aed format to upload into Aegis, please email education@rgs.org)

This resource was written by Dr Chris Pyle (The Perse School, Cambridge)
