A key area of expertise and activity for the Society centres around enhancing the learning about the local area. This is not only a specified part of the geography curriculum but embedded in the local area are examples of many of the wider issues studied in geography. Using the locality can also add much in terms of drawing on young people’s experiences and it is, and will continue to be, the focus of fieldwork during Key Stages 3 and 4.
The 'learning locally through fieldwork' project consists of several elements including:
- local resources guide including primary and secondary searchable online source materials, together with an understanding of their geographical context
- an online portfolio of exemplar local field activities, with supporting schemes of work, that add value to the curriculum
The project is centred around the Bristol and Bath area, but is a model that can be replicated in other areas.
Resources can be found by selecting a topic in the left hand menu bar.
How to use the 'learning locally through fieldwork' resources
Each fieldwork resource is split into sections to make it easier to find the information you need. These sections include:
- embedding fieldwork into the curriculum and accompanying scheme of work
- potential fieldwork locations
- fieldwork activities and things to think about
- adding value to your fieldwork with additional data and web links
For each resource you can download individual sections as word documents, or the whole resource as a pdf document.
The resources are based around the Bristol and Bath area, and are aimed at Key Stage 3. These resources can be adapted to be used in your own local area, and provide ideas as to where you might find additional data about your own local fieldwork areas.
Please note: potential fieldwork destinations have been mentioned in each of the resources. Many of these may not be suitable for school fieldwork, so must be checked fully before any fieldwork is organised. The Society cannot be held responsible if you do not follow this warning.
