Run in conjunction with Geographical magazine, Young Geographer of the Year began in 2000 and has become a regular feature in many schools' calendars
The task this year is announced on the Geographical magazine's website and in the July issue of the magazine.
This year's competition theme is 'Sorting the wood from the trees: the future of forests'. Prizes include a ticket to the RGS - IBG's expedition and fieldwork training weekend ‘Explore’, plus book tokens and atlases. The competition is open to young geographers throughout the UK and Europe under the age of 19 years
About the competition
The timing of the competition has changed for 2010. The title will be announced in June in the Geographical magazine and on its website. Prizes will be awarded in the autumn in a ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London.

- Senior Geographer (16-18 years old)
- Young Geographer (13-15 years old)
- Junior Geographer (12 and under)
