Call for Papers

Please note that the Call for Papers for consideration in 'open' sessions is closed; the below is for information only. Prospective delegates are invited to read more about the conference theme before submitting their proposal.

  • Information for prospective presenters
  • 'Open' call for papers - submit a paper to sessions convened by conference planning committee
  • Advertised calls for papers - browse or search a list of sessions being organised by RGS-IBG Research Groups and other independent organisers. Please note that the Calls for Papers for organised sessions are now closed. Papers submitted in response to CfPs for organised sessions should expect a decision from the session convenors by early-March. Details of papers accepted in organised sessions will be sent to the conference organisers by the session convenors and should not be resubmitted for consideration in 'open' sessions.

  Information for prospective presenters

  • Anyone can participate in the annual conference, and you do not need to be an RGS-IBG Fellow or member to attend (though discounted registration is available in those categories)
  • All participants, except non-attending co-authors, must pay the appropriate registration fee before attending the conference. Registration fees may be paid online from early 2012
  • An individual may normally only make two substantive contributions to the annual conference - please read the new guidelines for participation before submitting a paper proposal
  • There will be no proceedings of conference published, either online or in print, by the Society.  Paper titles will appear in the printed programme book, while abstracts will be available online. The conference organisers therefore do not require authors to submit their full paper before or after the conference. Session chairs or convenors may request a copy of the paper/presentation from authors to help with discussion in the session, but this is at their discretion
  • If authors require confirmation of paper acceptance, for example for funding applications, please contact AC2012@rgs.org for assistance

'Open' call for papers - sessions convened by RGS-IBG conference planning committee

Members of the geographical and related communities are invited to submit paper or poster proposals to sessions organised by the RGS-IBG conference organisers. The organisers will use the paper titles, abstracts and keywords to group them into themed sessions and arrange a Chair for the session. Subject to scheduling limitations, the organisers do their best to accept all papers submitted to open sessions for the conference.

Duplicate submissions cannot be accepted and the same paper should not be submitted for consideration in both 'organised' and 'open' sessions at the same time.

Papers submitted for consideration in organised sessions at AC2012 should receive a decision from session convenors by early-March. Details of papers accepted in organised sessions will be sent to the conference organisers by the session convenors and should not be resubmitted here.

Contributions that do not fit within the themes of organised sessions and/or have not been selected for organised sessions may be submitted for consideration in 'open' sessions.

This year's conference theme is Security of geography/geography of security

The deadline for submitting a paper proposal to an open session is Friday 9 March 2012. Authors will then be advised whether their paper has been accepted, after which the papers will be scheduled into themed sessions. The provisional programme (including open sessions) will be announced in April 2012.

Sessions convened by Research Groups and independent organisers

In addition to the 'open' call for papers, sessions are planned for the conference by Research Groups and other independent organisers. The table below shows a list of Calls for Papers that were advertised relating to the conference. All prospective delegates are welcome to submit a paper proposal to any of the sessions advertised.

Please note that each Call for Papers has its own deadline and process for submitting a paper proposal. Please read the Call for Papers carefully and direct questions to the session organisers. The Society in no way endorses the wording or subject matter of Annual Conference sessions - titles and abstracts are the sole work of the session contacts listed.

Important: Please note that this list of advertised sessions is not complete, and may also include sessions that will not be offered at conference. Monitoring relevant geography and other mailing lists, including those of Society Research Groups, may help prospective presenters find other sessions.

Tips for searching/browsing Calls for Papers:

  • View session details: Click on a session title to view full session details (convenors abstract, instructions for authors, deadline for submitting abstract, etc). This will open in a new window or tab (depending on your browser and settings)
  • Filter by Research Group: See all sessions sponsored and co-sponsored by a Research Group by selecting the Research Group name from a dropdown menu and click 'Search'.  The table will refresh to show the filtered list of sessions. To see all sessions again, change the dropdown to show <ALL> and click Search again
  • Search by keyword: Enter any word or phrase into the keyword box and click 'Search'.  The table will refresh to show the filtered list of sessions where your keyword or phrase appears in the title, abstract or keywords list (provided by the session convenors). You can search on parts of words using %, for example searching for "secur%" will return all sessions containing words starting with 'secur', including secure, security, securing etc.
  • Sort sessions by column headings: Click on a column heading in the table to sort the list of sessions by that field. You can sort by title alphabetically, by Research Group affiliation alphabetically (please note that where more than one Research Group is affiliated to a session they are listed in alphabetical order), or sort by the deadline for submitting an abstract

Advertise a Call for Papers on the conference website

All session organisers are encouraged to submit their Call for Papers to the conference organisers, to be added to the conference database and be advertised. Advertising your Call for Papers helps prospective presenters to find your session, and makes other session organisers aware of sessions being proposed on similar topics.

Please forward a copy of your Call for Papers to AC2012@rgs.org. Your Call for Papers should include the following information:

  • The title of the proposed session (please keep session titles to 15 words or fewer where possible)
  • A short abstract for the session (please try to keep abstracts to 300 words or fewer)
  • Names, affiliations and email addresses of the session organisers
  • Instructions for prospective presenters on submitting their paper proposal (what information they should send and to whom)
  • Deadline for submitting paper proposals
