Call for Sessions

Members of the geographical and related communities are invited to propose sessions for the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2012.

If you have any questions about proposing a session for conference, please contact the organisers at AC2012@rgs.org.

 Call for sessions

This conference will explore the many intersections between geography and security: meaning both the security of geography and the geography of security. The idea is to work between an ‘inward-looking’ concern for the well-being of geographical research, learning, teaching and communication, and an ‘outward-looking’ concern for how worldly geographies are deeply implicated in achieving or compromising the security of environments, peoples and communities.

The invitation to all geographers, physical and human, is to ask challenging questions about matters of geography and security which advance intellectual and practical agendas, addressing issues of major scientific and social significance, while also cultivating the institutional supports upon which our own ability to contribute as a subject necessarily depend.

Sessions are encouraged to demonstrate what a geographical perspective – spanning the sciences through to the humanities – can offer attempts at understanding and countering multiple sources of insecurity (environmental, climatic, economic, ‘national’, digital, personal).

  About proposing a session

Sessions may take the form of presented papers, panels, practitioner forums, discussions, workshops, or something else. Innovative sessions and formats are encouraged.

Sessions are scheduled into timeslots of 1 hour 40 minutes long.  A session may not normally occupy more than two of these timeslots in the conference programme.

An individual may not normally make more than two contributions to the conference programme.  Please remind contributors of this requirement when accepting paper proposals for a session.  The conference organisers will also contact individuals making multiple programme contributions once all session proposals have been received.

For more information about these requirements, session organisers should read the following guidelines before submitting their session proposal:

All sessions will be reviewed by the AC2012 Conference Planning Committee before being accepted for the conference.  the organisers hope to confirm formal acceptance of sessions by email in late February 2012.

Arranging sponsorship by a Society Research Group

Sessions do not need to be sponsored by a Research Group in order to appear in the programme, but session organisers may wish to seek the sponsorship of one of the Society’s Research Groups for their session.

Sponsorship normally consists of branding the session in the conference programme with the Research Group’s name, and the opportunity to promote the session through the Research Group’s communication networks.  It does not usually cover the cost of speaker/presenter attendance unless specifically agreed with the Research Group.

Opportunities for sponsorship by Research Groups are limited and may be on a competitive basis.  Each Research Group will manage its own sponsorship process.  Session organisers who feel that their proposed session reflects the interests of one or more of the Society’s Research Groups are encouraged to contact them directly.

View or share a Call for Papers on the conference website

All session organisers are encouraged to share their Call for Papers through the conference website.  This enables prospective delegates to find sessions suited to their interests, and helps session organisers to coordinate sessions on related topics.

Please note: a general Call for Papers, to sessions organised by the Conference Planning Committee (also known as 'open sessions') will be announced in November 2011.
