Field Experiences

This year there will be three field experiences – to participate please register by emailing AC2009@rgs.org with your name and the fieldtrip you would like to attend. Spaces on each are limited - you are encouraged to express interest early. (Participants must be registered for the conference)

 Transport and City Region Regeneration

In recent years, Greater Manchester has focussed investment in Metrolink light rail and heavy rail on routes linking major regeneration sites, Manchester city centre and several district centres.

The half day field trip starts in central Manchester and visits a selection of these regeneration sites, including Salford Quays and the new Media City. This fieldtrip  will complement the papers presented in the Transport and City Region Regeneration session.

  • Time: 13.30, Thursday 27 August
  • Meet: Entrance of University Place (conference venue)
  • Cost: TBC - about £20 is required to cover transport fares (as the Metrolink is closed for upgrade at this time) and a fieldtrip guide.
  • Co-ordinator: Richard Knowles (University of Salford)

  Urban Pursuit

A foot tour from the university campus into and around the city centre. We shall explore the Mancunian pursuit of urbanity by way of geometrical Georgian traces, the footsteps of Friedrich Engels, a Victorian climacteric, postwar replanning, modernist megastructures, postmodern urban renewal, icons, quarters, waterfronts, millennium projects and the serene traces of Manchester's medieval core.

  • Time: 14.00-18.00 Wednesday 26 August
  • Meet: Entrance of University Place
  • Cost: Free
  • Co-ordinator: Michael Hebbert (University of Manchester)
