Achieving sustainable flood-risk management in the UK

 Tuesday 8 November 5.30pm–7.45pm (networking drinks 7.45pm - 9.00pm)
 21st Century Challenges: Policy Forum

Panellists, drawing on significant insights from geography and other disciplines will question:

  • How can we manage effectively the flood risk in our urban environments and our farmed landscapes?
  • How can we build resilience within communities and what is the role of Central and Local Government?
  • What insights can research on river and landscape dynamics, an appreciation of space and place and an understanding of historical change bring to effective flood risk management?

This event welcomes all professionals in the broad field of flooding, including from practice, consultancy, policy and research.

This event was originally scheduled to run on 18 October.

Rescaling the UK's energy system

 Tuesday 29 November 5.30pm–8.00pm
 21st Century Challenges: Policy Forum

The UK Government’s overriding priorities with regards to energy policy are to deliver secure, reliable, clean, affordable energy. This presents policy-makers in Government with a ‘trilemma’: how can the UK decarbonise its energy system to meet the legally binding targets under the Climate Change Act and international commitments, whilst ensuring both security of supply and that energy is affordable for consumers? Panellists at the Policy Forum event on 29 November will consider the dimensions of this ‘trilemma’ and how this can be delivered upon in the context of the UK’s vote to leave the EU (‘Brexit’).

This event is in partnership with UK Energy Research Centre

Flooding: National problem, local solutions?

 Saturday 3 December 2016 3.00pm - 6.30pm (Discussion and buffet)
21st Century Challenges: Public panel discussion
Rheged Centre, Redhills, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 0DQ

Unfortunately this event has been postponed until 2017. Further details to follow.

This public discussion, open to all, will examine how in the face of increasing flood risk, communities can come together to use local knowledge to build resilience. The event will consider whether the Cumbria Action Plan is likely to be effective and whether the experience of Cumbria’s communities can  help to deliver a national flood plan.
