The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917)

‘Shackleton published details of his new expedition in early 1914 and used considerable skills to fundraise, mainly from private donors including: Sir James Caird, the Scottish jute magnet (£24,000) and Midlands Industralist Dudley Docker, (£10,000).

In addition to smaller personal donations, the British government also gave £10,000 and the Royal Geographical Society contributed a grant of £1,000. This was in line with the Society’s practice at that time of supporting scientifc research in the Antarctic.’
