Royal Geographical Society (with IBG): the heart of geography

Bombay Africans 1850-1910

Livingstone's daughter and son, Abdullah Susi, James Chuma and Reverend Horace Waller

The Royal Geographical Society played an important role in African exploration, supporting expeditions from 1855 onwards.

The 10,000 photographs and 2,000 maps illustrating Africa in the Society’s collections reveal the untold role that Africans played in expeditions.

This exhibition focuses on the African men - ‘Bombay Africans’ - who were at the heart of these expeditions.

The exhibition has been created with RGS-IBG fellow and historian Cliff Pereira and the Tanzanian Women’s Association, Friends of Maasai People, Congolese Community in the UK, Lancaster Youth Group, Ghanaian Elders Group and O-Bay Community Trust.

Heritage Lottery Funded   Funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation
Funded by John Lyons Charity   Access to the Society's collection is supported by Rolex
