Indian Ocean slavery

Henry Morton Stanley and Kalulu, Doctor Livingstone's boy Explorers of the period, such as David Livingstone, combined zeal for geographical discovery with Christian missionary work and opposition to slavery.

Research in the Society’s collections has uncovered the Indian Ocean slave trade and movement of Africans to Asia.

The Indian Ocean slave trade has a long, intricate history. Written and visual material pieces together Bombay Africans' stories, bringing insights to Afro-Asian communities in the Middle East and Indian sub-continent.
