In the footsteps of the 1868 British Abyssinian Magdala Campaign

Lecture (Kendal)

Using extensive illustrations, John Macfarlane describes retracing this extraordinary military expedition which marched 400 miles across unknown Ethiopian mountainous terrain to rescue the British Consul from an ‘impregnable’ 10,000ft fortress.

Visions of the world

New lands have always attracted travellers and explorers, but only relatively recently has this fascination combined with photography to produce distinctive beautiful images; a glimpse of the RGS-IBG’s vast collection.

Venue: Lancaster Maritime Museum, Custom House, St George’s Quay, Lancaster, LA1 1RB.

Clapham, North Yorkshire

Led by Dr David Johnson, author/lecturer on many aspects of local landscape history and director of significant archaeological excavations within Craven.

Everest: The Top of the World

Robin Ashcroft

Everest was climbed 60 years ago this month. Join mountaineer Robin Ashcroft as he relays the story of this iconic mountain following his involvement in the award-winning 50th anniversary exhibition in Cumbria.

Heart of the hero: the remarkable women behind polar exploration

Cambridge historian Paul Daw and Tim Foster, Head of the FSC Blencathra Centre, will share their interpretation of the National Park landscape.

Stuart Atkinson, Eddington Astronomical Society

Comets are the itinerant travelers of our Solar System; come and have a guided viewing of our latest visitor from the vantage point of Kendal Castle.
