World register of field centres

We currently have 379 field centres online.

The World Register of Field Centres identifies sites for environmental research, on any topic, anywhere in the world. It provides information on established field centres, in environments from the high arctic to the Sahara desert, to enable users to find the right centres and contact the right individuals.

The centres range from small independent field camps to large long-term international facilities. The only criterion for inclusion in the register is that centres welcome international visitors who wish to undertake fieldwork at the centre, whether scientists, students, teachers, school pupils or others.

We are developing the database now and welcome additions and comments.

The register is maintained by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) with the help of the World Register of Field Centres Advisory Group: Martin Whiteside, Nick McWilliam, Daniel Hourigan, Richard Ghail, Nigel Winser and Shane Winser.  The register was developed with funds from Professor Keith Miller of Sheffield University in recognition of the increasing importance of long-term field observations.
