Frederick Soddy Awards
The Frederick Soddy Awards provide funding for studies of the social, economic and cultural life of a region - anywhere in the world - to schools, undergraduate teams, and PhD students.
About the Awards
The Frederick Soddy Trust was established in 1957 under the terms set out in the will of the chemist and Nobel Laureate, Professor Frederick Soddy FRS, to support studies of the whole life of a region. In 2018 the Frederick Soddy Trust became a linked charity of the RGS-IBG, creating the Frederick Soddy Award Fund. The work of the Trust will be continued through the Frederick Soddy Awards, by providing funding to schools, students and postgraduates for studies of the social, economic and cultural life of specific regions within the United Kingdom, Ireland or elsewhere in the world.

Applications to the Frederick Soddy Awards can be made in the following areas:
Schools
Awards of £200 to £600 are given for school fieldwork groups. Please see the Frederick Soddy Schools Award page for more information.
Fieldwork and expeditions
The Frederick Soddy Awards support team fieldwork and expeditions through the Society’s Geographical Fieldwork Grants scheme. Awards of £500 to £2,000 are available to groups undertaking human geography research.
Postgraduates
The Frederick Soddy Postgraduate Award offers two annual awards of up to £6,000 to PhD students carrying out research on 'the study of the social, economic and cultural life of a region’ - anywhere in the world.
