Note: Completing this booking form will give you the option to attend the three events in the series (9 November, 30 November and 10 December). You do not need to complete a separate form for each event.
The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and AMSP (managed by MEI) are very pleased to offer a new series of three CPD events as part of our Geography and Core Maths initiative. We are offering teachers a single registration process to sign up for these events.
Ideally attendees will be able to make all sessions, but it is fine to sign up even if you cannot commit to participating in every session. These events will cover mathematical techniques that are relevant to GCSE and A Level geography specification content, including the NEA. We will also discuss how studying Core Maths can help A Level geographers.
(and an introduction to the CPD series)
9 November 2020 from 4.00pm to 5.45pm
We will look at the importance of data skills and the challenges faced by geographers in obtaining and using suitable complex datasets. This will include the use of Desmos classroom activities and other online tools.
30 November 2020 from 4.00pm to 5.45pm
We will look at a range of resources from different sources that will be useful for increasing engagement and curiosity. We will also explore how to use student discussions and observations to introduce statistical techniques.
10 December 2020 from 4.00pm to 5.45pm
We will discuss different sources of data, online tools and spreadsheets. The session activities will include the use of Desmos, Autograph and Geogebra – online statistical tools that will help you and your students to gain a better understanding of data.

The Geography and Core Maths initiative focuses on building support for the circa 80% of young geographers who currently do not study maths beyond the age of 16, and raising awareness of how Core Maths can support geography students during their A Levels and transition to undergraduate studies in geography.
