Drawing on qualitative feminist research with women anti-mining activists in Latin America, this presentation explores the concept of ‘development’ through the lens of large-scale resource extraction. Katy will critically analyse the ways in which large scale gold mining impacts communities in the Andes, and explore the ways in which these impacts are gendered, often affecting women differently and more severely. These impacts cause us to think about the notion of development and what it means – how are decisions made about development, and by whom, and to whose benefit? In this presentation, Katy will explore these questions through a critical examination of photographs taken by women activists reflecting on the concept of development in the context of large-scale resource extraction.
